Cut a rectangle from batting, say 9" x 18" wide. Too big? try 6" x 14".
2. Fold in half and sew the two short ends together, one seam in the back.
3. Hand-gather one open end with string, floss, pearl cotton or linen thread, pull tight and knot several times.
4. Turn inside out and stuff with poly-fil until firm, but not too firm.
5. Hand-gather the top and knot several times.
6. Using a long doll needle (say 8") and a long piece of the thread you used in #3, go in and out from the center top to the center bottom to pull the center in tight. Knot again.
7. Then proceed to go top to bottom around the outside of the pumpkin to create the veins, pulling tight each time.
8. Knot the thread each time on the center top which will be covered by the stem later.
9. Mix orange paint with water, coffee or tea and slop it on using your hands (pre-manicure not post). It washes off your hands eventually and I would remove your rings first!

*** Using coffee or tea makes the colors separate once dried and gives a wonderful aged look. Make different sized pumpkins from cotton batting, muslin, or chenille and paint each one a different shade of orange. Mix colors- it's fun! My husband went into the woods and cut old gnarly grapevine for me to use as stems. He cut them about 2"-3" and I hot glued them to the center top, covering the knots. It makes a wonderful fall decoration and costs so little for so many, a small package of batting, a bottle of paint, some stuffing.

Happy Fall!

Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01243865747879612723noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7874111050430738823.post-8242990866867767792019-07-22T18:21:00.000-05:002019-07-22T18:21:32.240-05:00Too Busy To Be Summer

Summers should be for vacations and swimming and sitting

on the porch stitching wool cardinals! But more about that below-

I love working in the garden and pruning the flowers. Unfortunately, spring ended this year with an abundance of rain so our garden was late to plant. Also some weird looking worms got our entire first patch of sweet corn. We never saw that coming and we have been growing corn for 40 years.

This was the first year we had no sweet corn put up in the freezer.

We are sweet corn deprived.

Last year the coons got the corn in the blink of an eye. It was gone before we knew it was even close to ready. We used to have a farm Beagle and she kept the coons out of the corn each year. They were never a problem, ever. She even loved corn on the cob herself but she never bothered enough of it to be a problem. Unfortunately, she passed away of old age a few years ago.

Now we have no beagle and no corn.

Not even in the freezer.

To make matters worse, the neighbors horses got out the other day and wiped out our entire second planting of sweet corn. The corn was up only about 6" but the rows were freshly cultivated and the horses thought it looked like a great spot to roll in the dust. They literally wiped out everything in the patch. It would be pretty funny if our freezer wasn't so empty.

It's going to be a desperate corn situation around here very soon.

Also, we only have 4 asparagus plants left. We are not sure if the horses ate them the other day or stepped on them but they have all disappeared.

The tomatoes and pepper plants are doing OK so far but everything is much later than normal.

This summer has been such an exception to the normal summer around here!

Bad garden!

Bad horses!

Too busy to enjoy anything!

On a bright note-

It has been a crazy year working on new designs and fabric lines.

I am also updating all of our older patterns with color.

It's no secret that I love cardinals. I am a Missouri girl, born and raised even though I did live in Iowa for four years.
Missouri is home to the Cardinals. This was the original table runner I did for this the Cardinal Wool Embroidery pattern in 2005.

Recently while playing with the designs I did a few more wool runners and quilts.

This runner has flat sides and a strip of red wool used as sort of a sashing effect. I think it's stunning with the red strip on there so I did a few more. The next one is a longer version of the same runner. All of the birds are facing forward so it would work well on a buffet or side table. It would make a great wall hanging too.

The cardinals are so vibrant made with Weeks dye works hand-dyed wools.

We have barely planted our garden this year due to all of the rain. Though we have no flooding as many in the mid-west do, we do have very wet conditions and very cloudy days when it is not raining. That's not exactly perfect conditions for planting anything.

I hope to finish getting the garden planted next week if the weather ever cooperates.

I finished another new fabric line plus I have been working on new patterns for next years fall fabric line called Harvest Berry. It is putting me in the mood for pumpkins. Everything in the fabric world happens well in advance. It's hard to keep up with what time of year it is at times! I am starting spring fabric next.

Our garden didn't do much this year. The coons got most of the corn. Our Beagle passed away last year so this was the first year it was unguarded. Funny we forgot how destructive the coons can since we had a "guard Beagle" for 13 years. We miss her for many reasons.

The lack of rain didn't help most of the garden and my favorite Amish store didn't get any Peaches from Southern MO this year. All in all there wasn't much freezing or canning going on. My husband made Kosher dill pickles. That's about it.

Here are a few new Moose patterns for the Moose Lake fabric line. This is Moose Lake.

This is my Pumpkin Patch pattern from 1996 that Keepsake Quilting carried for years. There have been many pumpkins out there similar but here is the directions for original painted pumpkin! You can also make them from any cotton fabric, chenille, burlap, wool or felt.

The local schools start in 2 weeks and it just seems so early but the weather has turned cooler and I guess fall is really on the way. I did a lot of traveling and goofed off more than I should have all summer but I don't regret it. I went to Memphis twice, Nashville, visited my aunt in Arkansas, and made several trips to St. Louis and Southern Missouri to see grand kids. I visited Hannibal, Missouri this week with a friend and I am headed to the Iowa State Fair next week with my cousin. While it's always nice to come back home after a trip, it's also nice to get away!

This last year has been crazy at best and I have struggled to keep up mentally and physically. I had shoulder surgery& torn bicep repair last fall and I am almost done with Physical Therapy. Glad that is behind me. I didn't really take any time off but I enjoyed a light schedule for a while.

It all started last year with the Bear Paws fabric line. No sooner than I got a few patterns ready then the Crafty Cats fabric line came out. I did a few new patterns and before I could finish A Moose for Christmas was sent to me and I started those patterns. They were shown at Quilt Market in the fall.
I had to start making lists to keep straight on everything.

I had gone to New York last June and finished the Liberty Hill fabric line. It is rich and full of color. Liberty Hill fabrics arrived just Christmas and we just finished five new patterns. We also posted lots of fabric and sample bundles here- Prairie Grove Peddler on Etsy.
Down the road-
Chicks on the Run fabric line will be shown in May at the International Quilt Market with a few new patterns. We are finishing models currently and almost ready for quilting. I will post soon.
Sunshine Garden fabric line will be shown in July at Bernina U. with the new patterns.
Winter Wonderland will be shown this fall at Quilt Market for next years holiday. New patterns available.

See why I have been so crazy? Just last week alone I was working on different six different fabric lines, between, proof reading Liberty Hill patterns, quilting the Pumpkin Patch quilts, applique on the Chicks on the Run quilts, designing patterns for Sunshine Garden line, approving color tones on the Winter Wonderland line, and drawing up a panel for my newest line- I can't tell you yet but it might be a forest animal!

I keep thinking I will slow down in my old age but apparently I'm not old enough yet.
I generally get up really early and I love to go out in the wee hours of morning as the birds start singing. Last week it was humid and you could actually break out into a sweat at 5 am. Not this week. We have lows in the 60's and it feels great.

Our garden has been wonderful this year. We have tomatoes that weigh almost a pound. I'm not talking about just a few but more than half of what we pick is bread size. It's a BLT bonanza around here. We did use Epsom Salts three times on them and it made a huge difference. The extreme heat and regular rain probably helped some too!

For years I have saved pickle juice once we finish a jar and cut up cucumbers to drop in. Sweet, dill and Bread Butter all work the same. After a few days in the brine the cucs taste like those great crunchy pickles at the Deli. This year, instead of making our own pickles, we decided to boil and cool the brine then drop in fresh picked cucumbers and guess what? It works too! They are crunchy and good like the Deli pickles. We haven't tried to actually can them to save for later but so far so good. We hate soft pickles.

My Bear Paws fabric should be in stores by now. If you can't find a store that offers it, or want to see it up close, I put a few bundles in my Etsy Store at:
I am a little behind here! The snows came, the snows went. The tulips bloomed. The garden got plowed. The garden was planted. The flowers started blooming. We used Epsom Salts in the garden and the tomatoes and peppers are humongous. It does work. We are now reaping the benefits. The kitchen counter is overflowing.

I went to New York for a week in June to visit Benartex, the fabric company I design for. I had a wonderful time all week and got a lot of designing done while I was there. We also went to Beautiful on Broadway one night. I loved Carole King as a teenager so really enjoyed the play. I now have six new lines of fabric coming over the next year. The first line coming up is called Bear Paws. Here is the panel:

It should be in stores soon. I will have some patterns on my website using the line very soon.

We got a dusting the other day but it didn't cause any problems on the roads. I am feeling under the weather tonight so I say, let it snow.
I think we got a dusting once or twice but it was gone as quickly as it came. Last week's flooding was unusual for winter time but not so unusual for Missouri. We have two major rivers that join in St. Louis and we have seen it all before. After all, that's how Lewis and Clark traveled west to explore.

We had a wonderful Christmas with all children and grandchildren in attendance for two days. It was like one big slumber party and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As they say, you never know what the future might hold so cherish today! I have had several friends pass this year and several others be diagnosed with cancer so I have a lot to pray for each day. The Lord has blessed my family and I am so thankful.

I am no longer carrying buttons on my website for patterns. I have started listing some of them on Etsy with the patterns at a reduced price and others on Ebay as 5 days auctions.

I have my new Garden Days fabric line in house now. As soon as we have time to cut it into bundles, we will offer it in our Etsy Store. We have several Folk Art bundles and only a couple of the Moose of the Loose bundles left on Etsy.

I listed a lot more on Craftsy. There are 80+ patterns offered as instant downloads now.

I pray each and every one of you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
I was honored this past week to be on Craftsy's Best seller list for downloadable quilting patterns. If you haven't been to Craftsy, you should check it out. They offer everything from quilt and craft patterns to cake decorating online classes. They are thousands of classes on there. It's quite impressive!
I finally updated the website so check it out if you get a chance. I used one of my tone on tone moose fabrics as the background and I really like it! http://prairiegrovepeddler.com/index.html
If you haven't been there for a while you might need to refresh.

I am a little behind with posting these new fabrics. This is the Moose on the Loose panel....
This has been the longest February in history. January was nice, at least in the Midwest. February was awful. Snow after snow and really, really cold! I got to the point of wearing my winter boots around the house as house shoes. I think we are finally climbing out of it. It's supposed to be in the 50's and 60's for the next week. Bye bye snow. Good riddance! My yard is a mucky mess.

I just finished working on another fabric line and moving right into the next one as soon as I can. I have some family vacation stuff coming up and a family wedding in the near future then back to work on it. We are starting seeds this weekend for the garden- a little later than last year but still reasonably on time for the garden. I am ready!

Merry Christmas to you and your family during this season of celebrating our Lord's birth. The weather has been great and the gas prices are down below $2.00 here in Missouri. Everyone in my house is healthy and I have a lot to be thankful for.

I plan to spend a few days enjoying my family, kids and grand kids. My newest grandson is due next week and we are thankful for the six healthy grandchildren that we currently have. We have a few things planned for the family gatherings and it all involves lots of food! I am up early to do some baking before the festivities start this afternoon. Tomorrow's festivities start earlier with our traditional egg casserole and sausage gravy breakfast.

Thanks to Pinterest, I have added a lot of interesting items to my list of culinary delights this year. I just love looking at Pinterest, in fact, I spend more time on there each day than I do reading the news or Facebook anymore. I love looking at do-it-yourself projects along with the recipes.

If you want to follow me on Pinterest, I am listed under prairiegrovegrl.

I will list new fabric bundles and quilts in my Etsy Store after the Christmas holiday season. Due to the new EU VAT Tax regulations, I am no longer going to sell outside of the United States, however, my patterns are still available through Quilter's Warehouse.
We just put up our tree even though it is not decorated yet. I'll do the lights tomorrow and probably start dipping into the boxes of decorations. I am working on some table runners and hope to have them finished and out on display soon. Somehow I completely lost my November. I think I must have blinked and it just disappeared. Honestly, doesn't it seem like life just flies by sometimes?

We got the garden knocked down and ready for winter. The leaves are finally gone from the yard and the gutter. My husband has been busy doing lots of remodeling projects this fall. Not only have we sold everything we don't use anymore around our property but we cleaned up what we are keeping. We completely emptied our shop, gutted it and redid all the electric, insulation and drywall. Now it's an extra double garage. I'm sure we will find plenty of things to put back in there once it's all painted.

I have been going through tubs and tubs of goodies leftover from 20 years of retail quilt shows and I have been finding lots of fun stuff to list for sale. I'm not planning on going to any more retail shows as a vendor so it's time to move it all out. I still have lots of different flosses, pearl cottons, sewing notions and fabrics to sell on eBay. I'm not retiring yet but certainly planning ahead.

I have a pattern special on my website this month. It's the end of the year special this year. You can get 25% off all orders of $20.00 or more. It includes all of the patterns and pattern/ button combos on the website. Just use Coupon Code PGP2014 when you check out.

I have been selling a lot of quilts through my Etsy store and Ebay. My eBay seller name is patternhutch. I have the last of them listed on Etsy right now if you know anyone needing a special gift for Christmas. I may start posting more specials on my Facebook page so check it out.Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01243865747879612723noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7874111050430738823.post-23512066341900672652014-09-30T01:52:00.001-05:002014-09-30T01:59:15.128-05:00Autumn is in the Air
Just when I think I am about to cross everything off my list and catch up, I realize there are things I never even added to the list to start with. ~~sigh~~

We got a new puppy last month and she has consumed the majority of my time. It's actually my son's puppy but I find myself helping every chance I get. She is a tiny 2 pound Chihuahua named Zoey. My Yorkie is not quite sure she likes her yet but they are starting to play together when no one is watching. Zoey has those very sharp puppy teeth and Toto has learned the hard way that Zoey plays rough. We are still working on the potty training as my son gets busy and forgets to take her out often enough. Hence, the Pine-Sol smell in the kitchen. Zoey is such a little joy to have around. Every time we go shopping, we take her along in a doggie carrier since she is so small and too little to leave home alone yet. No one at the store even knows she is in there. She rides along in the cart and never peeps at all.

My garden is almost done. It was a great year. Our late crop of tomatoes is a hit to everyone who visits. We usually send some home with them. I started the last flat of seed around July 4 and we are still getting an abundance of tomatoes.

I still have butter and romaine lettuce growing along the deck rails in planter boxes. It's my third planting of lettuce. We planted two crops of sweet corn also. This is working out rather well. I did some cutting of my basil plant and rooted them in the kitchen window. Now I'm ready to pot them up for the living room window this winter. I just love a garden in the living room all winter. I have a few other plants to bring in also.

I did my last craft fair last week with my daughter and it worked out really well. I literally sold everything. At the end I found another vendor to buy the EZ Up Shelter and even the cash register. While I enjoyed the craft fairs for 30 years I felt it was time to stop. I am ready for a new chapter in my life and plan to take more time off. I have a lot of books calling my name and I'm tired of being so busy. Anybody else feel that way?

I added new pdf patterns to Craftsy-
www.craftsy.com/user/2634293/pattern-store

I am selling off the last of the Harvest Song fabric here-
https://www.etsy.com/shop/prairiegrovepeddler?ref=hdr_shop_menu

I also added some of my last remaining quilt models. Check them out.

I am listing things on Ebay as I have time also. Right now there is some one yard cuts.

I added some instant download patterns and charts to Etsy and Craftsy. I updated the website again and added more $3 patterns. I have been cleaning my "warehouse" and tossing a lot of older patterns. I guess you can say I am still in a spring cleaning mood with the pattern business and my home.

We are wanting to downsize one of these days and I don't want to wait too late to start clearing out the old stuff. I have 40 years of collecting in my house alone. As they say:

You spend the first 40 years collecting stuff

and the last 40 years getting rid of it all!

I'm well into those last 40 years. I have been a cleaning fool. I listed some fabric on Ebay and I have a lot more to start listing this weekend.

My daughter and family have been here visiting. Her girls are growing up so fast, they are 7 and 2 years old already. Two year old Lily sings Old McDonald's Farm almost perfectly. It's a joy to hear her sing. My grandsons are 4 and 6 years old already and expecting a new baby brother or sister around Christmas. I am hoping for a girl personally. Every mom needs a daughter, right?

I lost some weight lately so I cleaned out the closet. I took piles of stuff to Good Will. I didn't wear most of it anyway even when it did fit. I did it mostly by walking and adding two protein drinks to my diet each day. I am forever adding new protein recipes to my menu. I'll share some of my favorite protein drink recipes below.

This week my list includes a new dishwasher, probably a Kenmore, and ordering a new vanity top for the master bathroom. We have the original dishwasher in the home and I am wanting a new energy efficient quiet one. One of these days we plan to sell the house and want to get it ready sooner rather than later. I don't know where we'll go but possibly move into town. We've been living in different houses in the country for about 25 years. I'd love to have a neighbor again some day.

Every time I photograph my garden, I forget to post the pictures. I'm getting really bad about blogging even. It must be the summer. There's just so much to do!

Here's some of my favorite protein drinks-

My low fat Orange Julius:
Mix it up and serve on crushed ice.
